The
first step to draw a head is to draw a circle (or an oval, it's up to you)
(A). If you can't seem to draw round circles
by yourself, it's a sign that you need some
practice at eye/hand coordination... X) Practice, practice, practice: you shouldn't need a tool!
Then, draw
the B lines. The result is a basic shape for a
human head!
For demonstration purposes only, I drew
the B lines in a very angular way : it is meant
to help you understand the next
steps. |

Now,
let me show you some important spots:
(1) where the
circle and the B lines meet;
(2) the
middle of the lower part of the circle;
(3)where the
B lines curve (the curve of the lower jaw) |
These spots
mark strategic places/heights!
(1) Eyes
(2) Nose
(3) Mouth
With this method, you don't have to guess where the eyes, nose and mouth should be, you KNOW ;)

The
same guidelines can be used for various view angles or perspectives... All you have to do is to adapt them.
Here you see
a simple 3/4 shot. |

And those
guidelines can be used for characters of all ages, depending on how you use them:
